Sound design is the creation of sound to support story telling in other media, from web to live performance, film to apps and video games. It could be further considered as the process of specifying, acquiring, manipulating or generating audio elements.
It can be viewed as three broad areas; speech, music and sound effects, but must be integrated into the overall production as opposed to being discernible on its own.
Bespoke productions, off-the-peg solutions and field recorded sounds can enhance and improve other media by adding another level of realism and stimulating other senses. Ambience and textures provide a sonic backdrop and a sense of space, while sound effects and musical score support the narrative by adding tension or emotional impact to key aspects of the story.
